The 2025 average tuition & fees $9,145 for state residents and $19,548 for out-of-state students (based on the rate of 4 years colleges), while tuition has been rising almost every year.
In 4-years public colleges, the current year tuition rose by 2.39% compared to last year - from $19,091 to $19,548. In private schools, the 2025 tuition is $28,854 which is increased by 3.24%
For graduate programs, the 2025 average tuition is $21,511 (1.64% increase) in public schools and $20,506 (2.42 increase) in private graduate schools.

Tuition Changes of the top national universities, liberal arts colleges, community colleges, and art schools

The 2025 tuition for top national universities rose by 2.63% for state residents and 3.11 % for out-of-state residents. In private schools, the average tuition is $63,060 increased by 4.37%. We compute the tuition changes based on top 100 national university rankings (provided by College Evaluator).
The average graduate program tuition in the schools is $16,547 (in-state rate) and $32,928 (out-of-state). In private graduate schools, the average tuition is $47,606 rose by 2.31% compared to last year.
The average tuition for top 50 liberal arts colleges is $15,262 for state residents and $32,768 for out-of-state students. The costs has been decreased by 0.83%. In private liberal arts colleges, the tuition is increased by 4.29%.
In the top community colleges, mostly public 2-4 years colleges, the average tuition is $5,035 for state residents and $9,115 for out-of-state residents. The in-state rate is increased by 2.77% and out-of-state rate increased by 1.71% compared to the academic year 2023-2024. We analyze the tuition changes based on costs at top 100 community colleges.
For colleges specialized arts, music, and design (top 50 art schools), the average tuition is $12,439 for state residents and $35,306 for out-of-state residents. The in-state rate is increased by 1.80% and out-of-state rate increased by 1.76% compared to the last year.

Tuition Changes By State

The below table lists the tuition change by state from 2024 to 2025. The tuition and increase rate is based on the costs at four(4) years colleges such as national universities and liberal arts colleges, but exclude community colleges and trade/vocational schools.
For public schools, North Dakota has the lowest average tuition of $9,883 ($7,707 state residents) and Virginia has the highest average tuition of $35,461 ($15,702 state residents) in public schools. In private schools, where tuition rate is same for in-state/out-of-state students, North Dakota has the lowest private school tuition of $9,883 and Vermont has the highest private school tuition of $35,461.
For public colleges, the tuition of Nebraska colleges have risen the most (7.40%) and the tuition of Connecticut have risen at the least (-4.50%). The tuition of Utah private colleges have risen the most (6.82%) and the tuition of New Mexico private colleges have risen at the least (-8.28%).

In the 2024-2025 academic year, the average undergraduate tuition & fees across U.S. colleges is $7,542 for in-state residents and $14,311 for out-of-state students at public institutions. Private colleges and universities charge an average of $23,347 for undergraduate programs, regardless of residency status.
For graduate programs, the average tuition & fees is $11,758 for state residents and $21,410 for out-of-state students at public universities. Private graduate schools charge an average of $18,762 for their graduate degree programs.
