Tuition trends by school type and level for Illinois colleges

There are 92 four-year colleges and universities in Illinois—12 public institutions and 80 private institutions. This page summarizes average tuition & fees and how costs have changed over time based on the latest available IPEDS data.

Undergraduate Tuition Trends

Public colleges: In 2025, average in-state tuition & fees are $13,730, while out-of-state tuition & fees are $19,559. Year-over-year, in-state costs changed by 1.76% and out-of-state costs changed by 3.00%. Since 2015, cumulative growth is 18.09% (in-state) and -5.16% (out-of-state).

Private colleges: The average tuition & fees are $32,265 in 2025. That is a 1.82% change from last year and 21.00% cumulative growth since 2015.

Graduate Tuition Trends

Public graduate schools: In 2025, average in-state graduate tuition & fees are $12,419, while out-of-state graduate tuition & fees are $18,955. Year-over-year, in-state costs changed by 1.80% and out-of-state costs changed by 1.16%. Since 2015, cumulative growth is 14.13% (in-state) and -2.49% (out-of-state).

Private graduate schools: The average graduate tuition & fees are $22,300 in 2025. That is a 3.12% change from last year and 21.31% cumulative growth since 2015.

Public vs. private comparison (increase rates): In 2025, private undergraduate tuition changed by 1.82% year-over-year. Public undergraduate in-state changed by 1.76% (lower by 0.06 percentage points vs. private), and public out-of-state changed by 3.00% (higher by 1.18 percentage points vs. private). Over the full period since 2015, private undergraduate tuition grew by 21.00%, compared with public in-state 18.09% (lower by 2.90 percentage points vs. private) and public out-of-state -5.16% (lower by 26.16 percentage points vs. private).

Graduate comparison: In 2025, private graduate tuition changed by 3.12% year-over-year. Public graduate in-state changed by 1.80% (lower by 1.33 percentage points vs. private), and public graduate out-of-state changed by 1.16% (lower by 1.96 percentage points vs. private). Since 2015, private graduate tuition grew by 21.31%, compared with public graduate in-state 14.13% (lower by 7.18 percentage points vs. private) and public graduate out-of-state -2.49% (lower by 23.80 percentage points vs. private).

COA Trends

Undergraduate cost of attendance change by school type (tuition & fees + room & board): In 2025, estimated on-campus COA is $30,371 (public in-state), $36,200 (public out-of-state), and $48,907 (private). Year-over-year, on-campus COA changed by 3.58%, 3.97%, and 2.92%, respectively. Since 2015, cumulative on-campus COA growth is 26.58% (public in-state), 9.73% (public out-of-state), and 25.29% (private).

Off-campus COA: In 2025, estimated off-campus COA is $30,928 (public in-state), $36,757 (public out-of-state), and $49,463 (private). Year-over-year, off-campus COA changed by 3.80%, 4.15%, and 3.07%. Since 2015, cumulative off-campus COA growth is 28.39% (public in-state), 11.09% (public out-of-state), and 26.41% (private).
