Undergraduate Tuition Trends

Public colleges: In 2025, average in-state tuition & fees are $8,797, while out-of-state tuition & fees are $17,901. Year-over-year, in-state costs changed by 3.88% and out-of-state costs changed by 2.81%. Since 2015, cumulative growth is 49.59% (in-state) and 27.24% (out-of-state).

Private colleges: The average tuition & fees are $21,139 in 2025. That is a 1.90% change from last year and 10.29% cumulative growth since 2015.

Graduate Tuition Trends

Public graduate schools: In 2025, average in-state graduate tuition & fees are $10,688, while out-of-state graduate tuition & fees are $19,493. Year-over-year, in-state costs changed by 5.30% and out-of-state costs changed by 6.31%. Since 2015, cumulative growth is 52.03% (in-state) and 34.98% (out-of-state).

Private graduate schools: The average graduate tuition & fees are $11,258 in 2025. That is a -3.75% change from last year and -8.26% cumulative growth since 2015.

Public vs. private comparison (increase rates): In 2025, private undergraduate tuition changed by 1.90% year-over-year. Public undergraduate in-state changed by 3.88% (higher by 1.98 percentage points vs. private), and public out-of-state changed by 2.81% (higher by 0.90 percentage points vs. private). Over the full period since 2015, private undergraduate tuition grew by 10.29%, compared with public in-state 49.59% (higher by 39.30 percentage points vs. private) and public out-of-state 27.24% (higher by 16.95 percentage points vs. private).

Graduate comparison: In 2025, private graduate tuition changed by -3.75% year-over-year. Public graduate in-state changed by 5.30% (higher by 9.05 percentage points vs. private), and public graduate out-of-state changed by 6.31% (higher by 10.06 percentage points vs. private). Since 2015, private graduate tuition grew by -8.26%, compared with public graduate in-state 52.03% (higher by 60.29 percentage points vs. private) and public graduate out-of-state 34.98% (higher by 43.24 percentage points vs. private).

COA Trends

Undergraduate cost of attendance change by school type (tuition & fees + room & board): In 2025, estimated on-campus COA is $24,751 (public in-state), $33,855 (public out-of-state), and $37,093 (private). Year-over-year, on-campus COA changed by 7.55%, 5.94%, and 5.11%, respectively. Since 2015, cumulative on-campus COA growth is 43.21% (public in-state), 32.92% (public out-of-state), and 21.34% (private).

Off-campus COA: In 2025, estimated off-campus COA is $23,781 (public in-state), $32,885 (public out-of-state), and $36,123 (private). Year-over-year, off-campus COA changed by 13.83%, 10.22%, and 8.91%. Since 2015, cumulative off-campus COA growth is 44.94% (public in-state), 33.70% (public out-of-state), and 21.65% (private).
